Fire Department Partners with Universities, Insurance Bureau of Canada and Others for Burn the Dorm 2014

On Wednesday, September 10th, at 6:00 p.m. the Fredericton Fire Department will be partnering with a number of organizations and businesses for Burn the Dorm 2014. It will take place in the courtyard area, below the Student Union Building on the UNB Campus.

The event is proudly presented in partnership with Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC), UNB Security, St. Thomas University, NBCC Fredericton, Kidde United Technologies, Troy Life & Fire Safety Ltd., and the Canadian Automatic Sprinkler Association.

Fire is a serious concern for the Campus Community, as well as the residents, as homes are where our citizens and students are most vulnerable. More than 80% of all fire-related deaths occur at home

To help students and residents understand how dangerous home fires truly are and to inform them of the steps they can take to stay safer, we will be presenting a dramatic side-by-side fire and sprinkler burn demonstration.

The Fire Department will be constructing two fire demonstration units for this live burn – both will have smoke alarms and one will have a fire sprinkler system installed to demonstrate the life-saving difference this vital protection makes when fire strikes.

"We are proud to join with our partners in fire safety to present this demonstration of the destruction that fire can cause in a dorm room," said Amanda Dean, Vice-President, Atlantic IBC. "We all have a responsibility to prevent fires where possible to keep our friends and neighbors safe. Events such as this serve as a reminder that an ounce of prevention can help save lives, homes and irreplaceable keepsakes

Thanks to IBC, Kidde United and Technologies, and Troy Life & Fire, 150 smoke alarms will be available on a first-come-first-served basis, for those that register to have them installed by the Fire Department.

Media are invited to attend the event as well, and there will be an opportunity for interviews, and more information following the event.

World Trade Center Memorial Wall at FDNY Headquarters, which lists the names of the FDNY members who have died due to 9/11-related illnesses. Thirteen names were added on Sept. 4, added to the 76 already dedicated on the plaque.
